To the South
of Port Sudan are the reefs and islets of Suakin that takes the
name from the city constructed in blocks made from corals. Suakin
used to be the main port for Sudan until it was abandoned and
it is now a ruined village well worth a look around if you have
any spare time in Port Sudan. Continuing down South, the small
reef of Jibna, marked by a beacon, offers two dives on the East
and West reefs which are sheer vertical walls. From here you will
continue to Shaáb Anbar which is a beautiful lagoon surrounded
by large reefs. This lagoon provides the only safe anchorage in
the South and more often than not you will be escorted into the
lagoon by dolphins jumping alongside the ship. There are numerous
sites that can be visited daily from Shaáb Anbar.
Sailada Kabir,
affectionately known as Turtle Island is everyones fantasy island.
The beaches are made up of beautiful white coral sand surrounded
by a turquoise sea. It is on this island that the turtles lay
their eggs and you will encounter turtles on every dive.
Nakhalat al
Qaseer are pinnacles rising from depths of 60-65 metres in a surrounding
sea of 630 metres. The main pinnacle which is cone shaped, starts
in a depth of 5 metres and just seems to go down and down. You
can easily swim around the Pinnacle in one dive and this is where
the action is! If you want to encounter the ‘big’ stuff this is
the place to be! You can almost guarantee to see hammerhead sharks,
an occasional manta ray and large oceanic sharks. The top of the
Pinnacle is like submerging into an aquarium and you will want
to spend hours here watching the fish go about their daily lives.
Pender Reef
is similar to the main Pinnacle, with a larger top. Again, the
marine life is prolific and you will see schools of jackfish,
tuna and the odd hammerhead shark to brighten up your day!
